It’s that time again. Time to donate blood. In the process of trying to find the number (you would think I could remember 1-800-GIVE LIFE), I discovered that the Red Cross has feeds. Researching US Treaties and New FOIA Facts

LLRX has a lot of new and revised articles out. The two that stand out for me are the completely revised and updated, "Researching U.S. Treaties and Agreements" by Marci Hoffman and the new FOIA Facts column "FOIA Appeals, the Unspoken Problem" by Scott A. Hodes.

"The Brain Remembers, Even if We Don't"

The Salk Institute has a very interesting press release about recent findings that "your brain cells may 'know' more than you let on by your behavior." The results are published in the October 20, 2005 issue of Neuron pp. 359-371. The article is "Neural Correlates of Knowledge: Stable Representation of Stimulus Associations across Variations in Behavioral Performance" by Adam Messinger, Larry R. Squire, Stuart M. Zola, and Thomas D. Albright. You can read a summary or purchase the article (via Science Direct) here.

You can read the press release (which may be easier on the brain) here.

Feed Link of the Day - The Pocket Part

I have seen a few bloggers mention The Pocket Part: A Companion to the Yale Law Journal (which is new to the Web), but I haven't seen anyone mention the feed. Here's the site description for The Pocket Part:

"The Pocket Part is the online companion to The Yale Law Journal. As members of the legal community know, legal publications often contain "pocket part" supplements with up-to-date information and commentary. The Pocket Part plays an analogous role. It features op-ed length versions of Journal articles and responses from leading practitioners, policymakers, and scholars. The Pocket Part also serves as a forum for our readers and authors to discuss legal scholarship.

While full-length scholarly works remain at the center of legal debate, students, professors, and practicing lawyers are increasingly turning to the Internet to read about, and comment on, developments in the law. With The Pocket Part, the Journal hopes to combine the strengths of both print and online media, broadening the readership and influence of traditional legal scholarship while enriching the dialogue among the academy, bench, and bar."

Ten RSS Power User Tips

Check out Steve Rubel's "Ten RSS Hacks" over at Micro Persuasion here.

BOPCRIS

BOPCRIS stands for British Official Publications Collaborative Reader Information Service. It is a free, searchable Internet database of over 38,000 references from the British Official Publications. It spans 1688-1995.

Some full-text documents have been scanned into the system. Those that don't have full-text availability, have detailed abstracts to help searchers find the documents in libraries. Here is where you can search or browse BOPCRIS. Click here to see an example of one of the scanned documents available through the search.

You can also search or browse the 18th century British Parliamentary Papers Digitisation Project (their goal is to create a comprehensive digital library covering 1688-1800) here.

Feed Link of the Day - Wilma

If you are worried about which direction Hurricane Wilma is heading and with what force, you might want to sign up for NOAA's Hurricane Wilma feed. It will update you each time a Public Advisory has been issued.

Unfortunately, you still have to click on the links in the feed to read the Advisories and to view the graphics (I'm hoping they improve that for future feeds). The one feed has both English and EspaƱol.

Searching the "New" Web

Bonnie Shucha of WisBlawg (who, incidentally was featured in the Law Librarian Blog's Spotlight today) has a really great PowerPoint presentation titled, Searching the "New" Web: Blogs and RSS. It has some good links and is very well organized. It's definitely worth checking out. You can access it via this WisBlawg post.

Feed Link of the Day - US Federal News Radio

As some of you may know, I'm on the verge of transitioning between jobs. I'm leaving the law firm world to return to the federal government. So, it seems appropriate to make the Federal News Radio podcast my FLOTD.

For those of you outside the beltway, district, country...Federal News Radio is "WFED in Washington, D.C. covering both the federal government and those who do business with the government concentrating on management, procurement, technology, security, policy and pay and benefits." I wish they had a text feed, but it looks like the podcast will have to suffice for now. You can get text feed for the Washington Post's Federal Page, though.

Federal Filings Alert™

Federal Filings Alert is a weekly index of selected new cases filed in the US District Courts. It is produced each Monday by WANT Publishing Co.

You can click on the case links to view the docket sheets. The dockets link into Pacer and you will need your Pacer login to access the linked docket items.

Here's where to access Federal Filings Alert. Wouldn't it be nice if they added feed for this?

UPDATE: The link to this site has been deleted because the domain is now (09/01/2007) a pop-up "spam" site.

Feed Link of the Day - ABA Site-tation

I just ran across the ABA Site-tation site this evening. I looked at the recent posts and a lot of them look familiar. However, the wonderful thing about blawgs/blogs is how much they evolve over time. I think it's worth subscribing to see where they go with this. The concept, "New or useful websites of interest to attorneys and other legal professionals, and legal technology news and highlights" is certainly a good one. : )

Bloglines Separates New & Saved Posts

Bloglines has made a few changes. One of those changes was adding hotkeys. The new hotkeys are: j - next article; k - previous article; s - next sub; f - next folder; A - read all; r - refresh left pane. I think that's kind of interesting. I might use the "r" key from time to time.

The change I really like, though, is on the highlighted "new item" count on the left screen. Now, if AbsTracked has 3 new items and you look at them and mark one to read later (by checking the "keep new" box on the right), instead of showing (1), it shows (0:1). It differentiates between new posts and posts you've saved to view later. That's a huge plus in my opinion.

"Librarians and Google share a mission: to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful. We support librarians like yourself who work each day to further that mission. This page is a first step toward improving and expanding that support."
They will be launching a quarterly newsletter "just for librarians" in the next few months. You can subscribe to the "Google Librarians" mailing list here.
