Loansome Doc Gets A New Look!
It looks like some great changes are going to take place with Loansome Doc on June 5th. Check out the details here. Loansome Doc is a great service (but it was a little challenging to use) that allows people to order documents found on PubMed. You'll find a link for more information on Loansome Doc from an earlier AbsTracked post here.

Pentagon Channel via RSS
With US Memorial Day on Monday, I thought this might be an appropriate time to post about the Pentagon Channel's feed. You can subscribe to the Pentagon Channel’s streaming military news and information broadcasts via RSS. Here's the Top News feed. You can also get feed for Newscasts, Specials, Briefings, "America Supports You," Updates, Interviews, RECON, Ceremonies and "The American Veteran." The feed is all text, but if you click on a headline from your aggregator, you'll be taken to that specific broadcast. Click here to watch the Pentagon Channel's 24 hour live stream. You can also watch recorded broadcasts (including briefings) and send them to someone via e-mail.
NOTE: I just noticed that the link to the streaming video doesn't appear to work with Firefox, so if you have a problem, switch to Internet Explorer.

Travel - Kitschy & Bizarre
With the US Memorial Day holiday extending the length of the upcoming weekend, you might want to take a little road trip. So, where do you go? If you like "kitschy" or the downright bizarre, you might want to check out Roadside America. You can find out where to see the world's largest (insert any word here), amputated legs on display (one happens to be in Washington, DC), fiberglass giants, a beer can house (I won’t even get into the pet cemeteries) and so much more. You can search by state or by attraction. You can also click on the interactive map here. If you really want to be in the know (I know I do), you can sign up for their “occasional” e-mail newsletter here.
If you're in the Washington, DC area, you might want to drive over to White Post, Virginia to check out Dinosaur Land. After reading about it on Roadside America, I checked it out on Google Local and the Google Directory to see what else might be near Dinosaur Land. I found that Gore's Custom Slaughter & Processing is just over 4 miles away. I also found other interesting attractions like this Monster Truck Racing venue and Haunted Nightmares (I think I might be experiencing that right now). If you like the idea of traveling through Virginia, but those attractions aren't quite your cup of tea, there is always Foamhenge. And you thought DC was exciting?!

House of Butter recently pointed out ALM’s experts & consultants site. You can currently search for more than 15,000 experts. Chicago
Chicago Crime Data
A lot of bloggers have been writing about the new ChicagoCrime.org site...and for good reason! Adrian Holovaty (you can read his blog here) merged Google Maps with data from the Chicago Police Department to create this amazing site! The most amazing part of the site (to me) is that you can actually get RSS feeds with the latest crimes for each police beat and each city block in Chicago.
Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) Map
ChicagoCrime isn't all Holovaty has done with Google Maps. He has also merged the CTA Map with the Chicago city map at Google. Read more about that here.
Electronic Encycopedia of Chicago
No, this one isn't Holovaty's. It's brought to you by the Chicago Historical Society, The Newberry Library and Northwestern University. It's a wonderful resource for Chicago history. You can get to the site here. Check out the list of maps here.
Billy Goat Tavern
The Billy Goat Tavern, an institution in Chicago, is coming to Washington, DC. Click here and look right above "The Curse of the Billy Goat" for that little announcement on the Tavern's site. You might also want to read about the supposed curse on the Cubs baseball team. Click here to read more about the new BGT coming to DC and for additional history about the famous Saturday Night Live skits regarding the Tavern. Do you think the Tavern is coming to DC to give the Cubs' fans a place to go when they come to see the Cubs play the new Nats? Do you think it's an attempt to break the curse?
Cubs Feed
If all of this writing about the Cubs has made you want to keep track of what they're doing, here's a news feed on the Cubs from Topix.net: http://rss.topix.net/rss/mlb/chicago-cubs.xml

RedLightGreen (in a nutshell)
It has certainly been mentioned around the blogosphere this year. Searcher magazine had a feature article about ReadLightGreen and Open WorldCat last month. So, what is RedLightGreen?
In a nutshell, you search for books at RedLightGreen. It is the Research Library Group’s Union catalog of more than 130 million books. You can pull up the catalog record and find a library in which it is located. The Research Library Group (RLG) is a “nonprofit membership corporation of universities, national libraries, archives, and other memory institutions with remarkable collections for research and learning.”
That's it. However, if you want to read more about it, just go here.

ERIC - Free Full-Text Documents
From ERIC's Web site:
"The Education Resources Information Center (ERIC) is a digital library of education-related resources, sponsored by the Institute of Education Sciences of the U.S. Department of Education. When the ERIC digital library opened to the public on September 1, 2004, the collection consisted primarily of electronic bibliographic records describing journal and non-journal literature selected by ERIC from 1966 - 2003. The collection has expanded to include full-text articles. In years ahead, the collection may include other electronic resources such as audio and video materials."
"More than 107,000 full-text non-journal documents (issued 1993-2004), previously available through fee-based services only, are now available for free. ERIC is moving forward with its modernization program, and has begun acquiring materials for addition to the database."
You can search ERIC here.

More Law Journal Links
Yesterday, I posted a link for searching law journal articles on the Internet. I thought I would add two more helpful law journal links today.
Washington & Lee Law School's Current Law Journal Content
Here you can search a vast number of current law journals in a variety of ways. You can search by:
- journal name by using "jo" - example: "jo(harvard law review)"
- author by using "au" - example: "au(lessig)"
- article title term by using "ti" - example: "ti(legal malpractice)"
- subject by using "ab" - example: "ab(ethics)"
You can also combine search tags. Your results will have a hyperlinked TOC. Click on it to get further links to the journal homepage and to other sites where you should be able to obtain a full-text copy. You can also access all of the RSS feeds here.
University of Southern California Law - Journal Library
Wendy Nobunaga, Head of Cataloging at Gabriel and Matilda Barnett Information Technology Center and The Asa V. Call Law Library at USC's law school has compiled a great, linkable list of law journals that are available on the Internet. Not only that, she has also coded what's available at each site:
F = Full-text, A = Abstracts, T = Table of Contents, S = Subscription Information
Isn't that nice? Here's where you can find Wendy's list.

Free Digital Science Articles
The Library Link of the Day was to this article. It is about the free, searchable science article repository called DAREnet. Here is a description from the Dutch DARE Web site.
“The DARE programme is a joint initiative by all the Dutch universities and the National Library of the Netherlands, the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). Its aim is to store the results of all Dutch research in a network of so-called "repositories", thus facilitating access to them. All the institutions involved do this in a similar way, but retain responsibility for and control over their own data. This material can then be made available in a range of ways and forms: online through personal or university websites, existing preprint servers or e-journals, or in traditional journals or books. Or even in new, yet to be developed means of academic communication.”
“Cream of Science is the showcase of Dutch prominent research. More than 200 top scientists in the Netherlands with 25.000 publications are accessible for everyone. About 60% is full content available.”
“DAREnet gives access to a broader collection that is guaranteed digitally accessible without any restrictions. As of May 2005 DAREnet consists of 47.000 digital objects. The full text available publications of Cream of Science can also be found here.”
I ran some searches and received great results. The results I looked at were all in English.
Here is a link to the DARE site. Here is a link to the search page.

Dissertation Links
CRL’s Foreign Doctoral Dissertations
ResourceShelf had a brief post today about "Foreign Doctoral Dissertations." It sounded interesting, so I took a look. You can search databases at the Web site for the Center for Research Libraries (CRL) to see if they have a dissertation in their databases. CRL is a consortium of North American universities, colleges, and independent research libraries. So, when they say "foreign," they presumably mean non-American. Though they don't update their Web site copyright date, they do update the site itself. Here is a link to the search page. Here is a link to information about borrowing from them. It’s not quite clear whether non-member institutions can borrow from them, but they include an e-mail address for more information.
ProQuest Digital Dissertations
“As a visitor, you will be able to freely access the most current two years of citations and abstracts in the Dissertation Abstracts database. To search the entire database of more than 1.6 million titles, you will need to connect from a subscription institution.” Even as “a visitor” you get access to a 24 page PDF preview of many of the dissertations. Here is the link.
Index to Theses – UK & Ireland
“A comprehensive listing of theses with abstracts accepted for higher degrees by universities in Great Britain and Ireland since 1716.” Again, this requires a paid subscription to access. Here is the link.
Theses Canada
You can actually access the full-text of electronic Canadian theses for 1998-8/31/2002 at Theses Canada. You also have the option to borrow or buy other theses at this site. Click here to search.
Dissertation Abstracts International
The library of Congress has some good advice about tracking down dissertations including accessing Dissertation Abstracts International and searching FirstSearch. You can read LC’s research help here.
Dissertation.com
Dissertation.com buys and sells dissertations. You can also search and browse their collection here. They offer a 25 page PDF preview.

Feed Link of the Day - Satellite Images
If you don’t have time to play around with the new Google Maps, you can always just subscribe to the feed for Google Sightseeing. They post some very interesting shots from the Satellite side of Google Maps. I’ve been waiting for them to post the bizarre satellite image of the US Capitol Building and surrounding Senate and House office buildings, but they haven’t yet. Here’s a link so you can check it out for yourself. It's too bad that whatever is blocking them out isn't also blocking out the Library of Congress across the street. One of the Computers in Libraries (CIL) speakers pointed this out in Keyhole last March. Here’s the feed for Google Sightseeing.
BTW, as long as I’m writing about Google, if you haven’t already heard about it, Google Web Accelerator is available for download here. It is supposed to speed up your broadband connection. I tried it and to be honest, just like Firefox Pipelining, I really can’t tell the difference.

Free Litigation Headlines
Would you like free topical litigation reporter headlines delivered right to your desktop? Click here for a list of RSS feeds for over 50 LexisNexis Mealey publications. Click here to sign up for e-mailed headlines for any of nearly 50 of West's Andrews Litigation Reporters. While I have not done it (because I’m leery of anything involving my ID), you are supposed to be able to get free RSS feed for Andrews headlines (and many other Westlaw sources) by using WestIntraClip here.
I did a little search just now to see if anyone else posted about WestIntraClip and found this LawLibTech post. You should read it. How weird is it that Cindy Chick posted that exactly one year ago today! Freaky!

Feed Link of the Day - ComputerWorld
The worm attack that was mentioned over at TheCommonScold today made me think of a good feed for today. ComputerWorld has several great news feeds available. You can get access the list here. There is one specifically for viruses, but the “latest 10” breaking news feed covers that and a lot more. You can get that feed here.
